Rising damp is a common form of damp that affects the walls of predominantly older buildings that may have been built without a DPC. It can cause serious structural damage to buildings over time. Rising damp is often confused with other forms of damp, therefore the ability to correctly diagnose rising damp is essential. At Dampdoctor we have over twenty years of experience and technical knowledge in diagnosing and treating rising damp. Our experienced team identify targeted solutions specific to your property needs, ensuring the best use of your budget.

Rising Damp occurs in buildings when water from the ground rises up through the bricks and mortar of a building by capillary action, in the same way that a sponge will soak up water from the floor.
Rising damp can cause serious structural damage to buildings. Some symptoms which can help you identify rising damp are:
We use two separate highly effective solutions to treat rising damp. The specific method employed is dependent on the specific building material in question. Chemical injection methods generally only work on bricks or mortar where there is a horizontal mortar bed. Alternatively, the Electro Osmosis method is employed in situations where random rubble or stone walls are affected with rising damp.
The Electro Osmosis method of treating rising damp is highly effective in solving rising damp and works just as the “poles” of magnets repel or attract each other. Water molecules in capillaries typically move from plus (wall base) to minus charge (upper wall). The Electro osmosis damp proofing systems work by using the principle of osmotic flow to overcome the capillary forces that cause rising damp by adjusting the direction of the moisture down wards. This is achieved by placing a series of anodes (positive charge) in the upper wall which repel the moisture molecules, and cathodes (negative charge) at ground level which now attract moisture molecules downwards. Ultimately this method achieves rediverting the water movement, solving the initial problem.
Chemical injection is the method of injecting a water repellent chemical into the brick or mortar joint which lines the capillaries in the substrate, once cured it creates a continuous water repellent barrier. Damp proof chemical injections are highly effective and have been used by us for many years. After treatment, this method prevents damp from rising up the wall. Click here for more information.
Rising damp is a major problem in Irish buildings. Early identification is extremely important as continued exposure overtime can weaken the structure of the building. ‘We were experiencing severe damp and mould problems in our bathrooms and bedrooms. We also noticed the children were beginning to suffer from chest infections more and more. After receiving recommendations for the Dampdoctor Team, we decided enough was enough and contacted them. The dampdoctor team called and sorted all our problems in a very professional manner. We also got a mould clean which cleaned the affected areas and killed the existing mould spores in the property. Best money we have ever spent.’
Fergal McDonagh, Kildare.
‘After putting up with a damp smell in our home for way to long, the last straw was to find that our shoes actually turned green and our clothes started to go musty. We then contacted the Dampdoctor team and organised to have an onsite survey. Our surveyor was full of information and explained everything to us in great detail. Having gone with the recommended solutions the damp-musty smell lifted very quickly and we have no more green shoes or musty clothes. I must say that the entire team from Dampdoctor were a truly a pleasure to deal with and highly professional from beginning to end and I would highly recommend them’
Melanie Shore, Dublin.
“We called Damp Doctor as we had significant mold growth on the ceiling of our en suite bathroom. Damp Doctor were extremely knowledgeable and professional to deal with. They provided an excellent service, first installing a new high capacity extractor fan and one week later completely removing the mould from the bathroom. We have no hesitation in recommending Damp Doctor.”
